And this is where one of the most satisfying aspects of Christmas comes - as your kids or loved-one opens up their Chirstmas stocking or sack and peer into the lovely collection of stocking fillers.
At first they'll just glance and then tip the Christmas stocking up on end and tip all the Christmas gifts out.
The strange aspect of stocking fillers is that there is no conclusive evidence as to where the tradition of buying small Christmas gifts and placing them in stockings began. But it would seem quite logical that when the nation was at its poorest that families couldn't afford big and expensive presents like some buy today and as such needed to make them extra-special by placing them in whatever was to hand and then decorating them with a Christmas feel.
Today, parents tend to give much larger Christmas gifts such as bicycles, computer consoles and large games that wouldn't be suitable as stocking fillers, purely because of the size. But the tradition remains, parents and partners still give their loved-ones stocking fillers, although the cost of them has generally increased.
You might give your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife some jewellery or perfume which can easily fit into a Christmas stocking, but those just don't offer the sort of "fun" that stocking fillers have become synonymous with.
